shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b35d666005ea In the way of an update this Christmas of ‘03, ptb is doing two or three hours of "PT" at the Monterey Bay Sports Center daily. On the ocean and built by the tax payers, it may arguably be one of the most phenomenal exercise facilities in the western world. Usually do stretching and then an array of exercise machines. Some of them are actually fun as they have a flair to them. On some days Laura joins me for part of the routine. Yesterday
she whipped ptb at ping pong 31 to 29. She is on the tennis team at
school. Just was awarded a school "Letter" ... cool kid.
Congressmen,

Farewell service 23 November 2003 ____________________________________________ FUNERAL: Col.
Mitchell Paige was remembered as a modest man who downplayed his heroism. By JOE VARGO / The
Press-Enterprise RIVERSIDE -
Medal of Honor recipient Mitchell Paige was remembered Sunday as a
"warrior, officer, gentleman, mentor, guide and leader" whose courage
changed the course of World War II. About 650
people attended services at Riverside National Cemetery for Col. Paige, a
retired Marine Corps colonel who died Nov. 15 at his home in La Quinta at age
85. But the Marines may
have suffered even more, Bates said. "We have lost a
legend," he said. Col. Paige was
decorated with the nation's highest military honor for gallantry at Guadalcanal.
On the night of Oct. 25-26, 1942, Col. Paige -- then a platoon sergeant -- led
33 Marines who repulsed a series of human-wave attacks by 2,500 Japanese that
left every one of the Americans killed or wounded. Col. Paige suffered a bayonet
wound to his hand and shrapnel injuries. Military brass
recognized the significance of Col. Paige's action immediately, Bates said. Had
the Japanese routed Col. Paige's tiny force, they probably would have ousted the
Americans from Guadalcanal and threatened Australia, New Zealand and much of the
Pacific. "He could
still tell you about his Marines, their service numbers, their rifle numbers,
their hopes and fears," Bates said. "He cared for them so much." Several
speakers remembered Col. Paige as a modest man who downplayed his heroism,
telling admirers that he was only doing his job when he earned the Medal of
Honor. "Maybe
Mitch's most compelling quality was his supreme humility," said Michael
Goldware of Riverside, a family friend. "He stated that he was merely the
custodian of the medal and that he wore it for all 33 men of his platoon." In later
years, Col. Paige exposed nearly 100 imposters who claimed to have earned the
Medal of Honor. He worked with the FBI to help draft laws making it a crime to
fraudulently wear the Medal of Honor. Col. Paige's
service also included a 21-gun salute and flyover of planes from the same
squadron that supported him on Guadalcanal. Lt. Gen. James Conway, commanding
general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, presented Col. Paige's widow,
Marilyn Paige, with the American flag. Eight Medal of
Honor recipients attended Col. Paige's funeral, including Army. Col. Lewis
Millett, 82, of Idyllwild, who was decorated for gallantry in the Korean War,
and Robert Bush, 77, of Indio, a Navy corpsman who received the Medal of Honor
for actions on Okinawa in World War II. more Mitch

Pup Edition III Epilogue: Mitchell
Paige, WWII Medal of Honor recipient, dies at age 85 Monday,
November 17, 2003 (11-17) 00:03
PST LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) -- Mitchell Paige, a
retired marine colonel who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism
in World War II's Battle of Guadalcanal, has died. He was 85. Paige, whose family
said was the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the historic ground
battle, died at his home in La Quinta on Saturday from congestive heart failure,
said family spokesman Michael Landes. He had long suffered from heart problems. "I called him
my husband, my sweetheart and my hero, as well as my friend," his wife,
Marilyn Paige, said. "When I met him I said 'You must be where the name
gentleman comes from.' He was very unassuming and yet willing to stand up for
what he believed." On Oct. 26, 1942,
Paige was leading a platoon of 33 men when the Japanese broke through the line
directly in front of his position at Guadalcanal, part of the Solomon Islands in
the South Pacific Ocean. With all the men in
his machine gunner group killed or wounded, he continued to fire on advancing
troops until reinforcements arrived. He then led a bayonet charge and drove the
enemy's line back. A few weeks after
the battle, Maj. Gen. A. A. Vandergrift, commander of the First Marine Division
and later commandant of the Marine Corps, commended Paige: "Son, that was
an important hill that you and your men held. It was the last major Japanese
effort to dislodge us and capture the airstrip." Paige was given a
battlefield promotion to second lieutenant and was one of 440 Medal of Honor
recipients in World War II, although 250 were honored posthumously. After the war, he
wrote a book, "A Marine Named Mitch," and later served as the model
for a GI Joe Marine Doll. Earlier this year,
Paige was awarded his Eagle Scout badge 67 years after skipping the ceremony for
a career in the Marine Corps. He also was involved in a number of veterans
causes and worked to catch Medal of Honor impostors. The son of Serbian
immigrants, Paige was born in Charleroi, Pa., in 1918. He is survived by his
wife, six children, 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services are
scheduled for Nov. 23 at the Riverside National Cemetery. The family asks that
donations be made to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation or the World War II
Museum in Eldred, Pa. Mitchell Paige --
given Medal of Honor in WWII Michael Taylor,
Chronicle Staff Writer Wednesday, November
19, 2003 Col. Mitchell Paige,
a feisty and outspoken Marine who received the Medal of Honor for his
"extraordinary heroism" during World War II and then spent decades
exposing phonies who claimed the nation's highest military decoration, died
Saturday at his home in La Quinta (Riverside County). He was 85 years old,
and the cause of death was congestive heart failure. Col. Paige, who
spent several years living in Redwood City before moving to his retirement home
in La Quinta, was a "Marine's Marine," one longtime friend said. "He was the
epitome of a Marine," said retired Marine Lt. Col. Thomas Vetter of San
Juan Capistrano (Orange County). "He cared about his men, and whenever he
gave a talk, he said, 'This Medal of Honor belongs to all 33 men in my platoon
on Guadalcanal.' " He was born in
Charleroi, Pa., in 1918, and at the age of 17 walked 200 miles to a Marine
recruiting station in Baltimore and tried to join. The Marines turned him down.
He waited until he was 18, and this time they let him in. Pearl Harbor was still
four years away. On Oct. 26, 1942, he
found himself in the thick of battle as a platoon sergeant during the pivotal
battle for Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, a key to the island-hopping
campaign westward by U.S. forces bent on invading Japan. "When the enemy
broke through the line directly in front of his position, " his Medal of
Honor citation reads, "P/Sgt. Paige, commanding a machinegun section with
fearless determination, continued to direct the fire of his gunners until all
his men were either killed or wounded. Alone, against the deadly hail of
Japanese shells, he fought with his gun and when it was destroyed, took over
another, moving from gun to gun, never ceasing his withering fire against the
advancing hordes until reinforcements finally arrived. Then, forming a new line,
he dauntlessly and aggressively led a bayonet charge, driving the enemy back and
preventing a breakthrough in our lines." Platoon Sgt. Paige
received a battlefield commission as a lieutenant, stayed in the Marine Corps
and eventually retired in 1964 as a full colonel. His autobiography, "A
Marine Named Mitch," was published in 1975. Initially, he didn't want to
write it, but he was talked into it by a pal, actor (and former combat Marine)
Lee Marvin. The book is now in its fifth printing and is part of the "U.S.
Marine Reading Program," a reading list approved by the commandant of the
Marine Corps. Although he was now
well out of harm's way and spending much of his time as a public speaker, at the
heart of Col. Paige's life, as always, was The Medal. The Medal of Honor
is not just any medal. Nearly 40 million men and women have fought in America's
wars since the start of the Civil War, but only 3,408 have been recipients of
the medal (some of them more than once), 614 of them posthumously, according to
the Web site of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. The medal carries with
it an aura of exclusivity, a mystique that makes four-star generals salute
humble enlisted men who wear the coveted ribbon. As of April 2003, there were
only 137 living recipients of the medal, according to the society. So it was all the
more galling to Col. Paige when he discovered there were many Americans who were
saying they'd won it. (One of the first things anyone learns in Medal of Honor
lore is that you don't win it; you receive it. It's not a competition.) In a
lengthy interview with The Chronicle at his La Quinta home four years ago, Col.
Paige railed against the liars, saying he found them all over the place -- in
parades, at military bases, being mentioned in obituaries. At the time, he said
he had bagged at least 500 phonies. Col. Paige said he
had once been invited by a major general friend of his to ride with another
medal recipient at a parade at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, not far
from his home. When he got there, "the guy was sitting in the car, and I
walked up and took one look and told my friend, 'John, I'm going to watch the
parade from the stands. He's a phony, an impostor.' " The man, posing as a
Navy captain, had never received the medal and, moreover, had never been in the
service. Memorial services
for Col. Paige, whose Medal of Honor was pinned on his chest by President
Franklin Roosevelt, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Riverside National
Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside. Col. Paige is
survived by his wife, Marilyn; a son, Mitchell J. Paige of Goddard, Kan., and a
daughter, Janis Bruha of San Mateo; two stepdaughters, Wendy Allaire of Laguna
Hills (Orange County) and Judith Terry of Biggs (Butte County); two stepsons,
William Wylde of Whittier (Los Angeles County) and Robert Corey Wylde of
Fullerton (Orange County); and 15 grandchildren.

this Thanksgiving is another moment to be grateful for family, friends,
good health and surviving a few adventures in '03. Will be with
Laura for Christmas and the Navy for Turkey day.
Spent some time with Bill O'Reilly at the MCBH Kaneohe.
Been somewhat of a fan of Bill's show
"The Factor" on
the Fox Network. It is now the
highest rated cable show. Felt, Mr.
O'Reilly was at times was a touch
unfair to his guests. The private
time spent with Mr. O'Reilly was impressive.
He in private all six foot four inches was a gentleman.
Later his ninety minute speech to a theatre filled with Marines followed
by thirty minutes of Q & A's "spin zone" was enjoyable, and
kept everyone's complete interest. He
made a great case for forcing people in authority to speak straight on vital
subjects. He believes the FACTOR forces straight talk and the
viewers (not Bill) make their own
decisions. Gave
Bill a photograph of LtCol. Ollie

It was inscribed as follows: Bill, This Marine P

329 locked on Huurraahhh!!!! And so the
public address system at Dillingham airfield north shore Oahu boomed out as
the applause of the spectators and other jumpers echoed in the
background. Colonel Bates
just executed two flawless sky dives from three miles up and three miles out
over the Pacific Ocean. Then
circled over the Mokuleia Polo Field. They were perfect stand-up
landings ... like a feather
on the grass runway at Dillingham. He
then proceeded to visit the Dillingham Mansion and later review the polo game
underway with Murph Dailey pontificating. Pictures ...

... as always
when Colonel Bates and his lovely wife are in paradise.
Tom Prentice (USMC Major type) was also in Oahu for a short work trip. Needless
to say it started off with announce short jog around Pearl Harbor which ended up
a two hour arduous round trip to
Camp Smith up in the hills over looking the Naval Base.
John Bates loves "PT" many of his Leatherneck neighbors at
Pendleton refuse to "PT" with John.
Perhaps PTB should also go undercover ...? We
went to an Argentina gourmet evening at the Outrigger Canoe Club where three
"Gentry" ladies from Argentina hosted a lovely evening.
PTB wore his "bombachas" presented to me by Marcus Uranga the
founder and President of the International Polo Association.
(Riding breeches) plus a Team Donegal polo shirt #3.
Several guests wanted to know if I had rented an Argie costume ...
insulting. Gave an engraved "te
quierro Aragonite" mallet to their gourmet Baille the head gentleman of
this dining club started in 1229 in France.
Lovely event in spite of the food being too much and too rich a diet for
PTB. The next week we
went to Honolulu's venerable Pacific Club over 150 years old.
Where the American businessmen and Navy & Marine officers plotted the
over throw of the Hawaii Queen and her government in 1893.
The Central Pacific Bank Chairman Clint Arnoldus threw a
tasteful Halloween party at the club.
Where he offered a special
salute to John Bates as a returning war hero.
PTB went as a Jesuit priest and had a super time quoting Latin and
offering time in the confessional this Saturday to various guests.
Those two years in the Seminary with Dickie Moore finally paid a
dividend. ... smile.
Pictures should be available thru Shutterfly. Com. After
nearly twenty years of zero Halloween activity for PTB, we all were guests at
Chesty Puller's house where Marine
General Gardner hosted a truly great party.
Special effects, gourmet food a contest for best costume.
It was terrific. After having collected much data on Fleet Admiral Nimitz
(Five Stars) for the annual tennis tourney PTB & Jerrie Moore started last
June at Pearl Harbor in his honor I was ready. Dressed
impeccably with a five star Admiral
nameplate adorning an exact replica uniform ...
down to the detail. Passing
thru security at main gate Pearl broke Colonel Bates (second vehicle) and PTB
up. The Navy petty officer
choked for a moment and then
snapped to attention and proffered quite a salute. (as well as
a sailor can salute) Told
four Star Admirals Walt Doren and Tom Fargo in front of Marines present that I
had failed to pass as a sailor. Was
caught each and every time I returned a salute. (hard not to be a Marine
sometimes) A
few raspberries for the navy seemed as the usual order of the day. Next
evening came the 2/3 battalion birthday ball, where Colonel Bates was the guest
speaker. (politically incorrect too- bless him)
The Colonel stated that the radical Muslims wanted to die for Mohammed.
This creates a " win-win" situation as the Marine Corps wishes
to shoot them. We concluded
with Mrs. Bates WCMW giving a dual lessons in tennis and humility to JRB &
PTB. Amen _____________________________________________________ Click link ...

opusculum from Viet Thai Journey 12 September '03 First
embarked at Pattaya Beach, Thailand Alooooha
Kop from warm & humid
Thailand "PT" ing sans Colonel Bates & Admiral Metzger.....
visited the Royal Cliff Hotel...Pattaya
Beach ... then on to Bangkok via Hua Hin and Elephant Polo Tournament ... onward
to week long military review of battle sites in Vietnam. Where I understand US Capitalism has ultimately won the
country over.... Arrived
to visit US Marines and Thai Marines on station.
Land of Smiles and my favorite dish pad se u gai were welcomed sights. A retired Navy
master chief just took PTB & special friends for a scuba dive...former SEAL
type. Waters near Pattaya
are dark and foreboding.... little to see and visibility not desirable. Off
to Hua Hin and Pachyderm Polo..Hua Hin is about three hours south of Bangkok and
directly opposite Pattaya on the Gulf of Siam.
Elephant Polo is a kick and more serious than meets the eye or one would
expect. Originally dreamed /
conceived by James Manclark of Scotland fame, and later teamed
co creator Jim Edwards, British Army ex-pat, of Nepal launched the sport near their famous Tiger Tops
location. His son now carries on
the tradition. The
rules are different and are cleverly tuned to this
4000-pound environment. The
field is about the size of a football field.
They use the Thai Infantry grounds near the resorts in Hua Hin.
Three on a side, two chukkers of ten minutes each per game.
Switch mounts after the first chukker.
Umpires are mounted on a
elephant in a royal chair in comfort. The
ball is the same outdoor one use at all FIP & USPA games.
Rules are adjusted so that only one player from each side may be in the
"D" near the goal posts. Elephants
take up a little space. This
is their third successful year in Thailand with all the pomp and glory of a Polo
America Production. Many big name
sponsors as well as quite a following, which fills several, beach hotels during
off-season. This year Chevas Regal
was the major sponsor. In
spite of Thailand's love of Buddha they are remarkably tolerant of many life
styles. One team labeled the
Screwless Tuskers is all transsexuals..."Lady Boys" who played in pink
and full make up. Twelve
teams competed for the coveted cup. From
Australia, Britain Army Team, India, Sri Lanka, Germany, and of course Thailand.
Many horse polo types participate. The
mallets range from 75 inches to 96 inches and the stress in much harder on the
wrist and arm then low altitude polo. Twenty-two
elephants who play long days with most players using the same elephants and
rotating mounts and half time. These
bright creatures consume seven tons daily of pineapples tops, bananas,
watermelons and vitamin supplements. When
compared to a horse or dog they seem very intelligent.
Their trainers are passionately into these elephants. These
two ton mounts each have a pilot a "mahouts" who astride the next
direct jumbo to the next shot. It
is a lot of fun and perhaps a little safer and a whole lot slower than horse
polo. The whole range of shots
appear with the more experience polo players neck shots etc.
Near side is rarely used. Players
sew a Thai translation on to their trousers.
It makes in easier to have comm. with the mahout. Next
year will be in Hua Hin September '04.... Tune up your Pachyderm in time. Been
with Tom & some Marines solely
except for one weekend of Elephant Polo...what a kick ...
captured some classic pictures for my "I love me room..."
Will be proselytizing Hawaii polo and writing an article for USA Polo
Magazine and another for Marine Gazette. Aloha
Kop from Pattaya Beach, Thailand near the Thai Naval & Marine Headquarters.
In answer to queries from JPS,
"PT" is undertaken with Major Prentice each and every day. Tom is working
with US and Thai forces on new high tech devices
it appears to be classified. My
only knowledge is what I read in the Bangkok Post relative to Cobra Gold II. We travel on
via van to Bangkok, fly via Thailand Air to Hanoi , drive south to Saigon and
back to BKK and home to Hawaii. (ETA 6Oct03) ______________________________________________________________ To:
Marine Corps Association Thai Marines are
cool..... "Imitation is
the most sincere form of flattery" ... as the
saying goes and the Thai Marines have raised that to a new plateau. These 29,000
Thai Marines have from Commandant down the same pride and spirit de corps as
their friends in America. Their uniforms,
utilities, traditions, monuments, museum all be speak of close ties to America's
leathernecks. The new
Commandant Vice Admiral Virit speaks highly of his time with General Hagee, Lt.
General Libutti and more recently his friend Lt. General Chip Gregson in Hawaii.
Meet GlaHarn, Lt Monchai and other staff members of the Thai Marine
Command. Their Sunset
Parade is awesome. It is a once a
year event which retires all officers who have reached the age of sixty.
Similar to US airlines compulsive rule on retirement at sixty.
This year thirty senior officers and one four star Admiral Terdsak
Satiensawasdi, the former Commandant retired at this ceremony. Their parade
started at one hour before sunset on their headquarters parade deck, a charming
waterfront location. Two bands
several drill teams, one originally trained about twenty years ago by the
Marines from Washington Barracks 8th and I s.e.
These units may be a touch away from our Marine Corps experience but they
would rival and surpass any units anywhere in Asia. As well as many United
States military branches (non Marines) for military appearance and pride. The ceremony has
over fifty veteran sky divers, seven from HAHO levels with one sky diver
transporting the Thai Marine canine mascot to the delight of the large audience. They have
developed the skill of firing blank rounds intermingled with drill moves on and
off the ground in the parade area. Somewhat
disconcerting to have point blank rounds fired at the reviewing stand ...

witness / attend the ceremony for the remains of four US servicemen being return
to Hickham Hawaii for forensic DNA identity. It was held
with the US Vietnam Ambassador and several
Marines present (3 Majors 0302 types) and placed aboard USAF C130 to
Thailand and on to Hickham Hawaii via Guam with full honors. The JTFFA
Joint Task Force for Full Accounting originally had over 1800 still missing.
It is a costly but honorable pursuit our country continues with
cooperation of the Vietnamese Authorities.
Since 1973 this was the 90th time remains of Americans have been handed
back. This totals 810 since this
program started. This was the 74th
search and the process continues. America
stands almost unique in attempts to get our boys back home. Day
three we launched arguably the largest POV in Vietnam on infamous highway One
towards Saigon (labeled Ho Chi Min City by the victors).
The day visited the birthplace of Ho Chi Minh. He also commonly
called Uncle Ho and is much revered. The
mausoleum in Hanoi where he is entombed and on display two hours per day is an
awesome structure about eight stories tall.
Their honor guard and ceremony at sunrise and sunset is a spectacle which
rivals the best the USA has to offer. He
died a few years short of his victory but his hand picked successors carried on
their mission. Which seems to be
slowly converting over to capitalism. All
America's bad taste from KFC chicken to movies, jeans etc are becoming quite
popular. New
levels of international highway gambling were created...ask TSOCP about cattle
counts and accident counts on the "Road to Saigon" Our ace driver "Hung" was the only winner. Ho
Chi Minh was born in Vinh. His
birthplace is a shrine. Tourists
pay locals do not. There is a
double standard for many costs in Vietnam.
Second day we rolled onto Hue City located on the banks of the Perfume
River, where there is the Citadel and former moat surrounded castle where
Chinese styled Emperors for generations lead the good life.
One had 500 Concubines, twenty eunuchs and 132 children and of course one
wife the Queen.
This is quite a place to visit. We
did the tour in a torrential rain and it seem to make it special.
American and ARVN forces freed the city after 25 days of North Viet Army
occupation where they executed thousands of dissenters.
Hue (pronounce "way" city) is an old an charming City rickshaws
still ply the old streets now powered by a bike driver in the rear position.
The 100-year-old classic Saigon Hotel
is still operating. Their version
of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Stopped
briefly at the Gulf of Tonkin to watch the shrimpers ply their trade and touch
these infamous waters. Next
day on to Dong Ha, Quang Tri and the caves at Binh Moc.
These caves go 75 feet deep in a labyrinth of tunnels designed to protect
civilians from the B 52 bombs several huge
craters a nearby.
Seventeen babies were born in the caves during the war.
It is a sight to experience. They
have a sign there saying... "This
is our heaven and they came to bomb us"
Located near the ocean and when you immerge from the claustrophobic tour
you are on a tropical beach. Over
three million Vietnam people died in the war.
Two million civilians. We

opusculum on Elephant Polo..... Off to Hua Hin
and Pachyderm Polo..Hua Hin is about three hours south of Bangkok and directly
opposite Pattaya on the Gulf of Siam. Elephant
Polo is a kick and more serious than meets the eye or one would expect.
Originally dreamed by James Manclark
and later co creator Jim Edwards, British Army ex-pat,
of Nepal launched the sport near their famous Tiger Tops location.
His son now carries on the tradition some twenty years later.
The rules are different and cleverly tuned to this environment. The field is about the size of a football field.
They use the Thai Infantry grounds near the resorts in Hua Hin.
Three on a side, two chukkers of ten minutes each per game.
Switch mounts after the first chukker.
Umpires are mounted on an
elephant in a royal chair in comfort. The
ball is the same outdoor one use at all FIP & USPA games.
Rules are adjusted so that only one player from each side may be in the
"D" near the goal posts. Elephants
take up a little space. During
the game an elephant struck another one ninety degrees placing the player at
risk. Although shaken a bit he
survived because the elephant did not roll quite enough to crush the polo
player. The player is firmly tied
in at the waist and the hips. The
driver unencumbered rolled free. A
member of George Haas' safety committee suggested to Chris Stafford President of
the Elephant Polo Association, the ropes be looped thru the end of a nylon
safety belt and the clasp become a two-action parachute release type. Allowing an emergency out and not an accidental release. This is the
third successful year in Thailand with all the pomp and glory of a Polo America
Production. Many big name sponsors
and quite a following which fills several beach hotels during off-season.
This year Chevas Regal was the major sponsor.
In
spite of Thailand's love of Buddha they are remarkably tolerant of many life
styles. One team labeled the
Screwless Tuskers is all transsexuals..."Lady Boys" who played in
matching pink shirts and full make up. Twelve
teams competed for the coveted cup. From
Australia, Britain Army Team, India, Sri Lanka, Germany, and of course Thailand.
Many horse polo types do participate. The
mallets range from 75 inches to 96 inches and the stress in much harder on the
wrist and arm then horse polo. Twenty-two
elephants who play long days with most players using the same elephants and
rotating mounts and half time. This
bright creatures consume seven tons daily of pineapples tops, bananas,
watermelons and vitamin supplements. These
two ton mounts each have a pilot a "mahouts" who astride the next
direct jumbo to the next shot. It
is a lot of fun and perhaps a little safer and a whole lot slower than horse
polo. They whole range of shots
appear with the more experience players neck shots etc. Next
year will be in Hua Hin September '04.... Tune up your Pachyderm in time. Tim

still has the same wonders of beauty, grace and naturalness that warmed my heart

like the world has changed in many ways, but the islands never will lose their
ideal climate, the magic of their mountains, and sea and the beauty of their
flowers and trees, lush valleys and sparkling waterfalls. Out of this perfect
setting comes the eternal spirit of Aloha, inspiring harmony among people of
different racial origins, religious and cultues more successfully than any other

P R O T O C O L S. …Tower “Style &
Form are everything…. substance is a myth”… Nick Calvert 17 March 1969 This Tower
Condo board has decided to carefully outline the required appearance of our
tower lobby. The theory is that
the cost affect is zero to have a clean, understated appearance much like the
better properties. Professional
hotel men have stated: “Less is more”
and a devout minimal environment is what management should strive for… The tower
requires the following protocols… 1.
All machines, TV’s, advertising, brochures, water coolers, MUST be
out-of-sight. Not in the lobby but
if they are essential for guests they should be by the beverage machines and ALL
out-of-sight. 2.
Brochures could be handed out from under the front desk.
All parapanalia 3.
staplers. Credit card applications, coupons and items of this ilk…under
desk. 4.
There is many ways of disseminating literature…etc…without making our
prime area a flea market. 5.
(Regardless of contracts, pals, deals, conflicts, …the protocol is
primary) 6.
… A clean and clutter free counter is our goal… (Not even a pen) will
class up the tower with the cost is only conscientious management. 7.
Garage,
laundry tubs and other drive way items out-of-sight please. 8.
Beverage machine should have an Hawaiian front and be out-of-sight. 9.
Plastic flowers should be replaced with items of plain décor or real
flowers. 10.
Management should walk around to be sure this is a on going way of doing
business. 11.
All staff should pick up trash as they go to and from work especially the
managers who set the professional tone. 12.
One great hotel exec Conrad Hilton once said:
The best ingredient in a hotel property is the managers and owners
walking around and caring…. 13.
Cigarette smoking should be in the side areas…not in front of property.
Trash and cigarette refuse containers should be chosen for simple and
utilitarian design. Not
located in front of the main door. 14 thru 29
Everyone picks up litter…everyone owners, staff, hopefully even guests
pick up as they walk thru the property. C.R.
Smith founder & CEO American Airlines said “if you take care of the
little things; the big things will take care of themselves. If we all pull
together…we will all be proud and more professional. Patrick Brent M B

MBWA = Management by walking

Well, finally
home in Hawaii from the infamous "PT"
with Colonel Bates and the Marines week...ouch. John Bates,
reputedly the finest Leatherneck anywhere, has eight-mile runs up and down
Pendleton hills that try the soul. Already
dehydrated from a couple. of Bonus
runs, I took on a six-mile beach water run with 300 Devil Pups and their
officers. Running ankle to knee
deep in the Pacific Ocean is no picnic. Then
came the 35-foot tower jump and the long hike up "Old Smokey" at
sunset. Where at sunset we have a
moving ceremony and present the official challenge coins to the pups.
Flags waving and the Marines Hymn make sure there is not a dry eye in the
unit. Captured many
photographs of the three boys P.T. Brent Shangai'd into the encampment.
From England, Atherton Ca, and Hawaii.
These may be seen at web site....... http://www.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b3562c2ae463 Where our
tower jump and a few other "hurrah" photographs are available.......
below are even more Pups photos many
many...... http://www.shutterfly.com/osi.jsp?i=67b0de21b3563341a49f Landed the
week prior at the Santa Barbara polo club, where I attended the moving service
for Eric Friden at the Santa Barbara Mission.
Eric Friden was eulogized beautifully to a packed church.
Scores of people (SRO) standing followed by a reception at his hotel El
encanto in the hills over looking the Ocean.
Eric died violently five days prior on field one at Santa Barbara Polo
Field. Played with him in desert
and in Southern California for twenty years.
Eric was the sixth player I knew personally to die on the polo field, Back at Camp
Pendleton the emphasis is on Devil Pup activities. The second increment (each with 300 pups) has just completed
training. Will be
creating some footage of JRB & PTB introducing the new DVD edition of
Hollywood and Marines while PT ing. It is once again
terrific to be associating with real Marines doing the training they do so well. Semper Fidelis, Patrick _________________________________________________________________ September 2002 After a seeing
some pals at Quarters Six in San Francisco on 14 September (Bilbo's natal day),
traveled to Monterey to bond with a charming fifteen-year-old daughter and work
out at the MBSC their awesome sports center on the ocean. Then came the
sad news of Mrs. Madelyne Trione death. Decided
to take a rental car to Santa Rosa for the funeral.
The Trione family is special. They
have an Italian warmth and charm, which makes them all lovable.
The Church they built is contiguous to the Polo field in Santa Rosa. Named the Star of the Sea, which took the place of PTB
suggested name of Our Lady of the Mallet. The
funeral mass had every seat and standing area filled to capacity.
Two Bishops and six Monsignors officiated the Mass for Mrs. Trione.
The Eulogies given by her sons Victor and Mark were warm, moving and a
touch humorous. She had a wonderful
sense of humor and family. Victor said this had to be a nightmare for their
pastor. The church is overfilled
with hundreds of heavy hitters; and he cannot pass the collection plate.
Monsignor Fahey in his charming brogue said Madelyne Trione was re
locating to a "gated community" (small laughter followed) he said;
this community always has its gate opened.
The name of the community is Heaven.
Was able to visit with a few long time polo friends.
Hopefully I will see Henry Trione in Hawaii more often now.
In spite of Henry's scores of friends at moments he seem so all-alone at
the funeral. Then drove to
Oakland caught a late flight to San Diego.
Had Saturday breakfast at the Red Sails Inn, an old haunt of Nick's, JWC
and Rick Bockelman. Shoved of for
US Navy Coronado Island's "O" Club for a great beach wedding
celebrating Josh and Stacey Bates. What
a great pair, bright, attractive and Marine Lieutenants to boot! Then grabbed a
commuter to LAX and a flight to HNL Finished
a totally captivating book on the China Marines of 1941.
A true and exciting adventure called "Warning of War" by James
Brady, a Marine who collaborated with my friend Colonel Dick Camp on this spell
binding story. What a movie it should make.
It is must read for Leathernecks.....finally landed at Honolulu's
Airport..... and checked back into Penthouse Seven...Paradise. August 2002

USS Blue Ridge 2001 Southern Swing is "muy occupado" but clearly
different. Took off on a red eye to
Chicago and surprised my mother in her new nursing home called the Anchorage
reputedly one of the five best. Then on to
business in San Francisco, Newark (new home of CMC), a Dolphin Club swim in the
bay and attended Laura spring musical at school.
Where Laura brought down the house with an Irish River Dance arrangement.
She choreographed and managed the number.
She was the lead dancer and looked grand. Then back to
HNL for one day and the movie premiere of Pearl. (Separate report).
Back to SFO for an acrimonious shareholders annual meeting, two board
meetings and another chilly swim. On Friday
eight June Laura and I met with Admiral Tom Fargo at CincPacFlt Headquarters
Pearl Harbor. We had photos taken
shaking hands as a gesture of peace. This
of course was after the "men's department" comment last Christmas. (When reminded by
Admiral Fargo that the Corps was only a department of the Navy) Laura
presented him an engraved Polo mallet. (Resplendent with four stars and his
Monogram painted Marine Cami) He
gave her a coin and CincPacFlt hat. He
and his fifteen-year-old son will be coming out to polo soon. Will be assisting Tom Fargo in his biographical project.
His staff and facility are close to White House luxury.
He is securing for us a copy of the party video from Disney aboard the
USS Stennis. We will send a copy to
their new Skipper Mac. Laura hosted a
high altitude premiere of Pearl Harbor the movie at Penthouse Seven. Commenced
with a Black Tie dinner at our third deck pool for twenty-four guests.
Tom and Laura met the arriving General and others at the main level..
Laura labeled Tommy the valet parker and Ramona General Libutti secretary Marvin and PTB
are working on a distressed dot COM acquisition named TimeZone.com.
We are also reviewing a real estate horse deal out by Schofield Barracks,
which would be a tourist attraction / dud ranch with a little Polo. A university
of Hawaii professor has me interested in a new search engine for Internet, which
has an honest quality and a high-end appeal.
Did you know Internet doubles every one hundred days? Tom (Skipper
Alfa 1/3) just returned from a rare three week leave to the Continent.
HNL, Houston, London, Paris, Venice, Monte Carlo, San Tropez, Lourdes,
London and back to Hawaii. Met by
PTB and Laura at HNL with a triple Pikaki Lei. Laura is doing
volunteer work at Pier Seven the Bishop Maritime Museum (Lt. Josh Bates echo)
and at Tripler Army Hospital Aging Center. (Home of Bob Allen-polo star WWII
hero) She is also taking
self-defense course as well as swimming and playing Tennis with the Diamond Head
dawn patrol. (In whites Mrs. Bates) Laura
has chow scheduled on the USS Blue Ridge. She
attended the Miss Hawaii pageant. Father's
day mass at Saint Patrick's Church in Honolulu...really...very very few
Irishmen! She launches her swims
from Club ONR Charlie at Ala Moana Beach Park. Is attending the Marine Regimental Command change.
Her Graduation
from Santa Catalina was a classic. On
to High School there...amazing. I missed a few
special people in the mainland who know who they are. However Hawaii still has great allure and really nice people.
Scuttlebutt has it PTB does not like mainland haole's.
Hawaii is still beautiful. When
will we see you?? Aloha nui loa,

recovering from my super jet lag. Traveling
west is much easier. East is a
killer unless you want nightlife, not usually my forte. Plan on
reviewing my business deal here in Hawaii, swimming in the world's best swimming
hole. Which is my front yard.
Eating some "good" Chinese food.
American Chinese is far superior to overseas.
In fact PTB believes, with the possible exception of the French, the USA
has ethnic food, which is distinctly better than their "real" foreign
counterparts. We do better pizza
than Italy. better Mexican than Mexico, better Irish than Ireland and so forth.
Because we have superior ingredients and we work at food competition with
passion. Clearly my
dialogue has denigrated sine the USS Blue Ridge...where my memories are still
vivid, strong and loyal. Well,
Mrs. Libutti would have been proud of the Honolulu Symphony on 31 December at
the Halekulani Hotel! They started
off with a six musician violin ensemble.....PTB loves the sound of expert
violins...they were followed by forty musicians playing music from the movie
2001 from 2200 hours until 0130 on 1 January...interrupted by the barge off the
hotel doing the New Years fireworks show...not since Chicago and Nick Calvert
days has New Years been so completely enjoyable.
it fact is may have been the best New Years Eve ever ?
Laura wore her pageant dress for the upcoming Miss California teen
contest, Tommy and another Marine Erick Kish were attired in their dress blues
and I wore a white dinner jacket....ouch I am sounding like a social columnist
for the Honolulu Star Bulletin. The
outstanding, hotel staff and Fred Honda their manager treated Laura and the

Admiral Tom Fargo show us a short video on the new Disney movie entitled
Pearl Harbor mostly filmed at Pearl...an advance premier will be on a carrier in
pearl on 21 March 2001. The weather in
Hawaii is 83 degrees air and water 79 degrees..eat your heart out mainland
haoli's. Plus people wear no clothing here...well.... Tommy and
35,000 friends took on the Honolulu Marathon on the 10th of December...Tom's
time a respectable/no training 4:20 J A L is the primary sponsor and the
Japanese now dominate the run. The
announcing is in Japanese...amazing. The
race starts at 0500 directly in front of my home.
The fireworks off shore give a spectacular launch...the dehydration is
severe in Hawaii...my worse two Marathons were there.
Saw Tom off and came back to run the last six with our Marine athlete. One evening
that week Tommy was leaving on a date with his world class lingerie model and
PTB stated "why don't you stay and play chess with Uncle Patrick this
evening...you can join my celibacy club?"
Tom replied: " Patrick that celibacy stuff you handle so much better

Jim Sharp at I are
hoping to close our deal at JBL Hawaii. We
have been "FUBAR" ed by an environmental history of diesel pit going
back to 1942...a rare case where we and our seller's are both innocent; but
there is a chain of liability that could destroy this otherwise $$$$ appealing
acquisition. Laura ten day
Thanksgiving Day visit was terrific. She
went on one high tech cruise ship called the Navitek and saw the Elvis show.
Later Laura swum her first half mile swim with PTB in the ocean followed
by steering the Yacht Traveller thru the waters off Diamond Head and surf

more stories you may have read before or you may have not? Life
in Hawaii is, well, right for P T B. Have
a few mainland haoli roots, I have traveled back to the mainland several times. First trip was to hang out with Laura Elizabeth Brent a k a
Miss Teen Monterey, while her mother was away in Italy. Laura is awesome. Her
school grades, cheerleading, soccer, chess (yes chess). Table tennis makes Laura
an all around great young lady. Second
journey was back to Jim Sharp's daughter's wedding in Indianapolis, Indians....
Great wedding...very formal...Jim Sharp a longtime hero of mine is my business
partner in Hawaii. What a few
days.... First nonstop HNL to ORD and then a day with my Mom and sister.
On to Chicago Pizza with grammar school pal Dickie Moore...a visit with
DR Caleel my polo teammate and then Friday at the Notre Dame campus in South
Bend. Well, as you
might know Notre Dame never loses...really.
Scooped up some beautiful autumn leaves, place them in a fed ex box with
many Notre Dame / Hommes Book Store memorabilia and sent them to Laura in
Monterey. Traveled then to
Indianapolis, checked into the Indianapolis Athletic Club and went to a great
wedding, jogged over to the Medal of Honor Memorial, heard Kate Smith sing God
Bless America at Acapulco Joe's, witnessed an incredible restored downtown
Indianapolis...then rose at zero dark thirty Sunday and flew to Honolulu via
Chicago. Lighting struck my plane
just prior to HNL landing...very dramatic. Our new deal
in Hawaii should close 30 November and we should be off and running. Amazing the
machinations it takes to find the right fit.
Perhaps we will have a branch in Yakutat, Alaska? My P T still
includes calisthenics, weights, running and a long swim. Ala Moana beach park my front yard is truly special.
It took me years to appreciate it..sadly.
Many things are like that I suppose. Pete Martinez a dedicated hiker
tortured PTB up to the very top of the Koolau's...what a view the entire Island
of Oahu from the top.....Awesome. Had quite a
treat watching the Marine training on the big Island recently saw F 18 drop 500#
bombs, coordinating with artillery and of course infantry such as Alfa Company
1/3 and their Skipper Tom Prentice. Took Tom and several Captains out to way too
much chow and wine in Hilo. Where I
visited Ken's House of Pancakes...a Menlo Park favorite and, hopefully a whole
new story... Evita and
Scarlet (Donegal famous horses) never looked better. They are vacationing at
Mokuleia and their coats glisten.... They appear very happy. Operation

Other "haps" in PTB's life of late.... After dusting
off from my correspondent episode, a new super antibiotic fixed PTB up.
I trained for a fortnight for the grand opening of Mokuleia Polo at the
Dillingham Ranch Estate on Oahu's North Shore.
After one crash when the horse went down, bruised ribs, shoulder and ego
I played in the main game on Sunday. We
won 6 to 3 in a fairly good match. Marines
were there so were many friends and celebrities from the area.
General Gardner threw in the ball for the second half.
Perhaps my
polo program will return to the inactive queue for awhile. The following week while PT ing at the Outrigger Canoe Club I
pulled an ankle ligament t again and took quite a fall damaging both knees as
well. All is almost normal now.
Increased my swimming for awhile and iced the heck out of the ankle and
knees. Jim Sharp and
PTB incorporated S H A R P 29 Corp on 29 April to exploit our exclusive contract
with LG Imax which is the fastest growing competitor to Corian in the USA.
Looks like a winner. The
Hotel business is doing OK. Economics
could be better but many have it worse. Many great
Marine Navy activities here in Honolulu these days concerts and parades all
enjoyable and a proud way to celebrate the return of our troops. All for

Sunday 27 April 2003 Mokuleia,
Hawaii After a ten
year hiatus, the Hawaii Polo Club founded by Fred & Murph Dailey was
reopened in grand style. Having
once again assumed management over this special polo location, Mike Dailey,
Becca Dailey and his awesome mother "Murph" Dailey are hosting polo in
paradise. Located on the
North shore, and about as far as one can go in Hawaii without one's hat
floating. This polo field, which
parallels the pacific, is in a class by itself. Polo at Mokuleia is the shining star and centerpiece of the
magnificent Dillingham Estate. This
Gatsby era ranch is comprised 2600 acres, all having Mountains on one side and
the breath taking Pacific Ocean at its front door. Up a mile long driveway is a 1917 Mansion, private airfield,
virtually every type of equestrian activity including a breeding program.
All under the direction of Michael Dailey who also operates the Hawaii
Polo Inn &Tower in Waikiki. (www.HawaiiPolo.com) Opening day's
challenge was between the Oahu Blues (Dillingham's Original 1917 team title) and
the team from Hawaii Polo Inn &Tower. The
match moved quickly and the crowd was entertained by TV Radio live broadcasts as
well as sky divers and a US Marine Unit from MarForPac Hawaii.
The game opened with the ball being bowled in my Murph Dailey.
The second half ball was bowled in by Major General Gardner, USMC. Murph Dailey
presented the 1913 historic Bourn silver trophy to the Oahu Blues captained by
her son Michael Dailey. The
Governor of the Hawaiian circuit Bob Miller, Argentina's Santiago Uruburu, Becca
Dailey and P. T. Brent comprised
the winning team effort. (Score 6
to 3) Hawaii Polo was well Captained by New Zealand's Hal Hargrave (three goaler)
with Greg Davies, Gordon Smith, Mark Becker, and introducing Jana Mailow.
Best playing
pony honors went to an Argentine mare appropriately named "Evita" (of
LEB fame) This Bourn
Cup's history goes back to 1913 and was officially reopened in 1965 by a
California Team composed of David Moore, Todd Helsor, Captain Willis Allen
(still playing at age 90) and Mack Jason (three goaler) who scored the winning
goal in a close 10 to 9 victory. Against
Fred Dailey (Captain), Peter Baldwin, Freddie Rice, and Bim Wilson as Team
Hawaii. Hawaii polo is
rich in special traditions a warm Mahalo nui loa goes to the Dailey Family, and
all the other kama'aina's who have so unstintingly given to this great sport in
America's beautiful islands. A L O H A Tim Monaghan

Friday, May 16, 2003 Polo enthusiasts are hoping for a Renaissance On Oahu’s
North Shore By Brandon Masuoka Advertiser Staff Writer For the first time in 10 years, polo has
returned to the North Shore and enthusiasts say new players are needed to keep
the sport alive in Hawai'i. The
Hawai'i Polo Club began playing matches last month and will play its fourth
match Sunday at the Mokule'ia Polo Field at Dillingham Ranch.
Devon Dailey the eight goaler from Mokuleia will be once again
featured. The season runs through
June. Polo matches at Dillingham
Ranch ended 10 years ago after a Japanese company purchased the property for
luxury development, according to ranch manager Mike Dailey.
In August, a company from Spokane, Wash., in partnership with a
Hawaiian group, bought back the property and rejuvenated the ranch and brought
back the polo matches, Dailey said.Dailey is looking to bring back the
popularity of the sport that experienced its heyday in the late 1980s here
when an estimated 300 players participated. Currently, an estimated 60 to 100
are playing polo in Hawai'i, he said.On O'ahu, there are two main polo clubs,
the Hawai'i Polo Club in Mokule'ia and the Honolulu Polo Club in Waimanalo. To
rekindle interest in the sport, the Hawai'i Polo Club has scheduled a series
of clinics today through May 25 for beginners and players with some polo
background. The clinics will feature instructor Miguel Torres of Argentina, a
world renowned polo player who is based out of Santa Barbara."As with any
sport, you have to bring new blood into the game," Dailey said.
"Polo does it in two ways. Children are exposed to it because their
parents are involved or they get involved with stables and learn to
play."The other way is a lot of people in their 20s, 30s and 40s come out
to matches and later come back again to try it. Adults bring a certain amount
of financial resources with them, and that helps support the kids. You need
the mix."In addition, Dillingham Ranch and the Hawai'i Polo Club offer
polo lessons to the public. The ranch provides beginners with horses and the
equipment such as the mallets."All they need is boots," Dailey said.
"If they don't have boots, they can come with a hiking shoe."Marie
Medosi, 19, has been playing polo for about two months and said the Hawai'i
instructors are supportive."There's some good people behind the sport and
they're willing to educate the young people," said Medosi, who has a
background in dressage. "That's great. The more people we can get out
here, the better."Bob Hogan, a polo enthusiast and play-by-play announcer
for the matches, said the sport can be expensive for die-hard players, but
recreational players can enjoy the sport with a moderate financial
commitment."This sport is not just for the rich," Hogan said.
"There's a lot of people who play this game who are plumbers, carpenters,
electricians and firemen. They come from all walks of life."If you own a
horse you can play. If you do it right, you can keep a horse for a couple
hundred bucks to $400 a month. A good top-quality horse will run anywhere
between $10,000 to $20,000. But the average horse in Hawai'i can be bought for
$2,500 to $4,500."Dailey said the new ownership group is planning to
build two additional fields across the street in hopes of providing the North
Shore with one of the premier polo facilities in the state."As part of
new owner investment, they're going to take the old equestrian center and
upgrade that to the top facility in the state," Dailey said. "As
part of that component, there are going to be two state-of-the-art fields with
underground water, drainage and the whole bit. The first field should be
planted by late summer and should be usable by next spring."Once the
fields are completed, Hawai'i could become a polo mecca and host major
international competitions, Dailey said. The sport has also lured celebrities
and dignitaries to Hawai'i, including Prince Charles, his father Prince
Philip, Ginger Baker of Cream, Stewart Copeland of the Police and actress
Stephanie Powers.Dailey said Hawai'i has had an "incredible equestrian
tradition" with cowboys in Hawai'i before horseback riders on the West
Coast."Polo was played in Hawai'i before it was played anywhere west of
the Mississippi," Dailey said. "Polo and Mokule'ia have been sort of
a tripartite experience. It's a sporting event like going to races. It's a
social event with the tailgates and it's a day in the country." March 2002 The Academy of
Awards did a special co broadcast at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Monarch Room.

It is pure foolishness and of harassment value only. My plan is to
turn lemons into a machine gun. Local

resent a giant mainland haole Corporation attacking the livelihood of a fine

the way to send a message to these main land creeps is to switch their business

Pentagon, 3A480 _____________POLO___________ Dateline:
Sunday 27 April 2003 Mokuleia,
Hawaii After a ten
year hiatus, the Hawaii Polo Club founded by Fred & Murph Dailey was
reopened in grand style. Having
once again assumed management over this special polo location, Mike Dailey,
Becca Dailey and his awesome mother "Murph" Dailey are hosting polo in
paradise. Located on the
North shore, and about as far as one can go in Hawaii without one's hat
floating. This polo field which
parallels the pacific is in a class by itself.
Polo at Mokuleia is the shining star and centerpiece of the magnificent
Dillingham Estate. This Gatsby era
ranch is comprised 2600 acres, all having Mountains on one side and the breath
taking Pacific Ocean at its front door. Up
a mile long driveway is a 1917 Mansion, private airfield, virtually every type
of equestrian activity including a breeding program.
All under the direction of Michael Dailey who also operates the Hawaii
Polo Inn & Tower in Waikiki. (www.HawaiiPolo.com) Opening day's
challenge was between the Oahu Blues (Dillingham's Original 1917 team title) and
the team from Hawaii Polo Inn & Tower.
The match moved quickly and the crowd was entertained by TV Radio live
broadcasts as well as sky divers and a US Marine Unit from MarForPac Hawaii.

Southwest commuters fail to journey there. So PTB spent three eight-hour flights each direction.
One on Gulf Air (Arab Airlines...very safe from Terrorists) reading a
really good biography by Pulitzer Prize winning author David McCullough entitled
JOHN ADAMS. This best seller really
makes one feel like he is in the room with Thomas Jefferson, Franklin, and
Washington during the dramatic times which forged our country.
What intellectual giants taking on independence for the first time in
history from a world power. Creating
both a republic and a constitution, which have stood the test of time and,
indeed, have been emulated. First time I
ever really had the flavor of the events...an old story brilliantly told.
Clearly the best work the author has ever written. It is a rare
book or movie I consider a "must see" recommendation....
JOHN ADAMS...is a must read for every American.
I may be a little "bitter" if this recommendation is not
respected. If you read ten books

the movies and not the time I served. They are squared away young Americans doing a job few

imagination...better than Fort Knox. Ramadan
was in its last few days.not a fun time. Several
lavish hotels on this island country 20 miles off a causeway connecting them to
Saudi Arabia. Travelers from Kuwait
and Saudi come there because they serve spirits and our slightly less Muslim.
Attended a cricket match with a really neat British ex-patriot who took
us to the British Club for a proper lunch.
Tom is clearly well respected by his peers, superiors and his Marines.
Had two days R & R with Tommy at the Meridian five star resort...each
Sheik seems to compete on Hotel creations.
This one has a Trader Vic's where everyone seems to know the Marine
Skipper of ALFA Five. Will be
proposing the "Royal POLO Club of Bahrain" soon to the Sheik in charge
of horses. They have racing but no
Polo...may be an opportunity for Tom to improve his equestrian prowess.
Then on to Thailand.... Of course... I should never fail
to mention witnessing a world famous Cricket bowler bowl a "perfect

I love this spirit of Christmas. It appears more present; then in

spirit on board Japan Airlines, the terminal from Bahrain to Tokyo exceeds the
spirit in the USA...really...as a devout sentimentalists...PTB revels in hearing
White Christmas in charming Hotels like the Peninsula in Bangkok with Santa, and
staff singing carols, accompanied by violins.
Imagine Frosty the Snowman played with violins. Anything played on a

This not so humble Marine type took a few moments at the commencement of

more on Laura and her father Patrick's Irish adventure... We concluded a
great trip cruising the Rhine River in Germany by a trek to a real castle.
Then did reveille at zero dark thirty and took a train from the boat dock
in Bachara Germany to Mainz transfer to the Frankfurt airport and received
mediocre treatment from British Air who down graded us and ticketed us to London

November 2002 Left Hawaii in
early November, spent short night at LAX, went up to Monterey to visit Laura my
sophomoric star. Drove up to
San Francisco to a meeting at Baldwin Forrester & Company and attend the
twenty-first annual "Lunch Bunch" at the venerable Pacific Union Club.
This was created by Colonel McPike to celebrate the birthday with prior
active duty Marines who had accomplished an almost mystical level of success in
their post Corps years. This
year was the best ever. Al
Jamieson was President and provided outstanding master of ceremonies.
Al kept the tradition in first class style and form. With some assistance from MarForPac, we created a super
program with great photographs. If
you want to have it E-Mailed / downloaded to you; let me know? Mr. Vice was
the handsome Major Tom Prentice from U. S. Space Command in Colorado Springs.
The Major is their token Marine demonstrating military prowess in Air
Force land. The highlight
was the best speaker we ever had, Colonel John Bates from Camp Pendleton.
John, often politically incorrect, did a great job telling us about the
state of our Corps. Including his plans for "Urban Redevelopment"
in downtown Baghdad,"………smile.... A future "Sea
Story" (and true) is the request a few weeks ago for Senator McCain to join
our Marine "Lunch Bunch." Although
it was not an instant decision nor an easy call, the Senator, who was to be at
the club that day, was turned down. Three reasons
were offered: One....
He was not a Marine Two...
He probably doesn't know the words to our song. And ... Three...
He was not a Marine Well, the Sea
Story gets better.... after the lunch was over and things were being secured,
Major John Flaherty and PTB were hitting the lavish head the P-U Club has.
John Flaherty spotted Senator McCain washing his hands.
We introduced ourselves. He
said he heard about the Marine Lunch Bunch.
PTB stated sadly he was not included because he was not a Marine and
probably could not sing our song. The
Senator replied: "I know the words to the Marine's Hymn"
Therefore, we invited him to meet the one last uniformed Marine still
aboard. He marched forth and shook hands with Major Prentice who as Mr. Vice
spared this breach of protocol with no fine being imposed.
However, he did consider issuing
a Senatorial fine. Next day was
another Marine event. They went to
a considerably effort to remodeled Marines Memorial Club.
The club presented a fine lunch. It took place the day after the
Pacific-Union event. After the MMC lunch I shoved off for Oakland airport, lost
one futon, and flew thru a thunderstorm into San Diego.
Checked into the flag BOQ Quarters C, mahalo to the Bates' family.
The registry shows Marilyn and Mitch Paige were here last spring.
Clearly, PTB was in good company.
The Medal of honor recipient is one of our Corps major heroes. However, Marilyn
left a half of turkey sandwich under the bed.
I ate it....smile. While
attending the 227 birthday Ball with John and Stephanie, at the San Luis Rey
Officer's Club-Camp Pendleton on Saturday the ninth.
The Senator McCain story became more dramatic. General
Bowden, the Base General, had a
truly gifted speaker LtColonel Orson
Swindle,USMC a commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission in Washington.
Shot down on his last mission before going home (mission #205) This
Marine pilot spent six years and four months in a North Vietnam prison.
He well knew another one of my inspirational heroes Captain Jerry Coffee
in Honolulu. He eloquently related
the story of how John McCain loved Marines.
John McCain took pieces of stale bread and kool aid for coloring in which
to created (in their last year) an Eagle, Globe and Anchor (EGA) to humbly
celebrate the Marine Birthday.. The
Navy and Marine Officers would whistle the Marines Hymn in a small gathering on
ten November. Senator McCain really
does know all the words to our Hymn. This
heroic story made PTB feel sad. However,
the Senator still may not come to the "Lunch Bunch" (reference reasons
One & Three). During the
ball, Stephanie Bates and PTB did the slide together. They say I am forbidden to dance at the "O" Club
again. After a few
days of "PT" with my friend "JRB" and AA's finest; PTB
shoved off for home and Paradise. Hawaii is a
really good deal. Semper Fidelis

December at the hale Koa Hotel the MarForPac band invited PTB to join them on
the stage and lead them in Playing and singing the 1937 classic "The Song
of the Marines." What a
terrific moment it was. Until one
is up there with an entire band directly behind them, it is hard to describe.
The sound was awesome. The
Marines were all great and they knew the piece cold. A few years
back I discovered the music when creating the video "Hollywood and the
Marines." Harry Warren and Al;
Dubin who created over two thousand musical American classics such as "42nd
Street" which is still on Broadway today.
They collaborated on a move entitled the "Singing Marine"
featuring PFC Bob Brent from the Fourth Marine Regiment in Shanghai.
The "Song of the Marines" is poorly sung at center house 8th
& I S.E. Washington-Marine Barracks. The
Dolphin Club in San Francisco and a few other spots are now resurrecting this
great song. Unlike the solemnity of
the "Marine's Hymn" this is a fun song.

Marine Corps Triathlon at Kaneohe. Robb Etnyre,
Tom Prentice and celebrities too numerous to mention were present. On Sunday
linked up at PH7 with Mary Jane and Jim Metzger. Admiral of the US Navy's
Seventh Fleet, eighty ships, 100,000 plus sailors and Marines. My host Flag
Officer while on deployment the last two winters.
Quite a command
We three had a long lunch at the Halekulani were we discussed everything
from the new CMC, Tom's new job options and of course Colonel John and Stephanie
Bates. It was a grand time. , you missed a
great concert by the MarForPac Band at Kaneohe.
They are awesome show people and leathernecks too.
Warrant officer Gray is the consumate Souza style musician with style and
form. If you are in town never miss
his show. Next one will be at the
New Marine Corps memorial (Iwo Jima Sculpture)
This recent addition to MCBH is at the entry plaza to Marine Base Kanehoe,
Oahu. Mahalo for Betty Kamida, we will have dedicated stones surrounding this
giant sculpture of the Pacific Bloodiest battle.
Six Thousand Marines died 14,000 wounded.
The "must read" book Flags of our Fathers tells the story well.
The concert
had the ranking Leatherneck Generals present, as well as Mrs Ramona Robertson
the best & truest "Lady" our Corps has ever known. Effective 29
April I am now partnered with Mike Dailey in the Hawaii Polo & Tower
property. The adjacent Tower is a
distinctive forty story Waikiki landmark formerly an Outrigger O'hana

is the eulogy I created at 0500 the morning after Bob MacGregor's death. Robert E.
MacGregor dies at age eighty-eight in Honolulu. Bob, last days
were in a nursing home with a room and lanai overlooking his beloved Honolulu.
The Island Paradise he embraced after serving in the Navy and with Pan Am
during World War Two. Bob founded
Trade Wind tours, which in the
1950s grew into the largest wholesale travel business in the world.
He and his friends like Roy Kelley, Fred Dailey and Bob Allen were the
catalysts for the awesome rise of Waikiki and tourism in Hawaii. Bob, right
after love of his wife and daughter and a passion for POLO second to none.
He played with the greats. Royalty
and the who's who in Polo, like Prince Charles knew, liked and respected Bob
MacGregor. Bob founded and financed
the Honolulu Polo Club in Waimanalo near Honolulu.
Bob MacGregor was the force that kept the sport alive and well when
Mokuleia was closed by its foreign owners. The indefatigable
Polo Spirit of Bob MacGregor continues today on MacGregor Field in Waimanalo,
Hawaii. Thanks to Annette Ebinger

2000 EUROPA
REPORT: Hola,
Buongiorno, Bonjour and Aloha..... How I spent my
summer vacation a. k. a. Good bye Broadway;
Hello France.... Well, Lt.
Colonel Tom Koger's retirement party at Belleau Wood/Paris launched the entire
adventure. Melinda Brent's
O'Hare operation designed and created our first International M K R to celebrate
Tom's outstanding Marine career. Melinda
is working on a new DKR-I edition. LEB &PTB
(who started in Honolulu / 12 hour time difference) first flew to Chicago (WGC)
for LCB's graduation. Then on to
Boston for lunch at Durgin Park with the quiet Thomas Flaherty family.
In Boston had a ferry ride to downtown / made fifty quick bucks and took the red eye
to Charles de Gaulle Paris. Laura
was ebullient on her first take off to Europe...Lindbergh could not have been
more excited. Landed in Paris and
went directly to N D quarters one circa Parc Monseau
in the heart of Paris. Bill
Meeker's home for re grouping. Bill
& PTB went to Tom/s WWI battlefield clinic at Belleau Wood.
Where our U. S. Marines rescued Paris from the invading Germans, while
the French and British armies were fleeing...the rest is Marine lore and of
course well earned. Laura, and
Jocelyne did the 29 minute tour of the Louvre. Sunday was Tom
Koger's ceremony and the speech by General Jones, CMC, in fluent
French...impressive. Laura failed to
achieve her 13 flag rank coin....alas. That weekend
we had a charming dinner with Colonel Bates' friend Commander Al Oshirak, Navy
Seal and new aide to the Marine Commandant.
Al spoke French and captivated the entire evening. Not bad for a sailor..quite a charmer. Part
two.... Well, Laura
contributed the first part...therefore PTB's contribution.... After Belleau
Wood Laura saw Paris in grand style the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Sacra
Coeur, Polo Club Bagatelle, Napoleon's Tomb (circa
Laura Todd Cookie #4) L'Tour Dar Gent for Dinner with Claude Terrail,
Notre Dame (without a Quarterback) the Louvre, the Champs Elysees, (two Berets
and one over priced neck tie) an incredible restaurant L'Ambroisle, (hosted by
Monsieur Meeker) followed by a dramatic and extremely entertaining reenactment
of Lady Diana's fatal ride...starting from the rear of the Ritz Hotel-Paris to
the spot in the tunnel with dialogue by Mr. Meeker mischievous mind.
It left us all in tears laughing. Laura was
photographed in her new cream colored Beret with Monsieur Terrail at his
venerable 418 year old eatery over looking Notre Dame at night and of course she
had the famous duck and a dark chocolate souffle. Then on to
Gare Austerlitz for the "Hotel Train" to Barcelona, Spain.
Our compartment even had a real shower.
We at dinner, slept, and arrived in Barcelona while having breakfast. Checked into the
Victoria Apartments thanks to Luis Valdes and set up Laura's tutoring in Espanol
each day. Victoria was within
10,000 meters of the University, the Royal Polo Club of Barcelona and the Metro.
Much like Paris we metro'd many places. Barcelona
must be Spain's best town...especially after the 1992 Olympics little like San
Francisco's waterfront charm. Played
tennis on clay courts at the Polo Club in mandatory whites, which we found
common in Europe Jeannie Kelley. In Barcelona passed
on a few generous Polo offers (amazing) but enjoyed the town immensely.
Our favorite restaurant there was Chinese. Then came a short
flight to Venice, two days of violin music in San Macro's Plaza, gondolas,
swims, stayed at the Danielle Hotel and then took a big sail boat named the Wind
Surf from Venice, to Rab Island, Croatia, Dubrovnik, Corfu (never found Don
Flynn's H Q) Taormina, Sicily Almalfi, Italy and finally to Roma for
disembarkation to airport. PTB still does
not like cruise ships...this was a great one; but nor for me.
The life style is far too sybaritic even for a Taipan.
Would still prefer the Yacht Traveler under a Marine's command.
Captain Prentice's boat is now at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On Rab Island
attended the most memorable Catholic mass.
It is worth a return trip. The
monastery like small church was filled, three priests, ten altar boys in the old
garb, a choir and music like heaven, filled with incense which charmed all your
senses. This mass is almost worth areturn to Rab Island.
If one lived in Europe it is a "must
do." I hope to return. The
island on its own merits would be a nice vacation place. The friendliness and
cleanliness of the Croatian people was remarkable. Sadly everyone does not like them...I do. Sicily offered a
late night awesome fireworks / Lava display by God and Mount Etna's fire power
near the town of Giardini, where earlier PTB had jumped off the docks for a swim
around the boat. Thereby launching
the new chapter of the Dolphin Club on the Continent. Then a boring tour of Pompeii ruins near Mount Vesuvius then
on to home after abandoning Laura Brent to her Mother...both currently in merry
old England. On 22 June
will be back in Honolulu to "hopefully" conclude a new acquisition and
visit Evita and Scarlet at the Waimanalo Club on the following Sunday Buongiorno
& Aloha, P. T. Brent

packed day out of SFO. My departure at SFO
included Irish Sprint balloons and a great 8 & I salute from Miss Monterey

J A L is an incredible airline ...first time in years on board...what a
way to be treated in all classes...they do a sybaritic level of service ...at
this very moment I am viewing the best sight of San Francisco I have ever
seen...our flight path vectors the 747 over
the City on a pristinely clear day...over the Golden Gate Bridge and up the
rugged coastline of Marin County and then on to Japan....for a grand
adventure..every decade or so everyone should undertake a special
journey...right? Later
in the flight the service was awesome at all levels of service...the temperature
outside is minus 73 degrees ..at 29,000 feet...the TV monitor posts temperatures
as well as a video camera in the nose and in the tail ..quite the views...they
have a real time map of the trip at all times ...posting the progress throughout
the journey....the aircraft is unbelievably clean; especially when compared to
USA air carriers..wish we had a carrier like Pan Am used to be...sadly.

and I just returned from a walking tour of Yokosuka, two trips back to the ship,
did a movie, dinner at the club, a run around the base, and moved into the ship.
How does that compare to your day??? PTB is trying to do a two-year cruise in
one month. We just don't slow down for much." "Wish you
were with us. We sail for Shanghai tomorrow. If you have pissed anybody off over
here and they want to go to war, don't worry. The Navy has been training PTB on
how to fire those 5"54's, so we will just blow them away."

Location:
Latitude 32 12
North Longitude 134
58 EAST course 235 Shanghai
speed 14.7 knots Have met the
Fleet Admiral, the ship's Captain...and usually meet with the ship's senior
officers in the Seventh Fleet wardroom (Chow) Have been creating a
digital video for polo's Governor's Ball on 24 March at Eldorado /Empire Polo
Club.... spent time on bridge reviewing the navigation of ship...went up on 22
March at 0400 to see the sunrise. The young men
aboard this ship are from every small town in America and in contrast to my
earlier impression of the Navy. They
work very hard and long hours. They
are All-American types; it is a pleasure to chat with them about their families,
hometowns and their Navy and post military ambitions. These are Americans with a genuine patriotism that some
people feel is unfashionable today...sadly. Tomorrow...we
turn west into theYangtze river depth is 24 feet...our ship draws 29 feet..(
29...really ) easy to recall...only on full moon, the river's tide turns to a
marginal 34 feet..our ship is over 660 feet long and over 100 feet wide and 177
feet high is the super structure...my cabin is just behind the flag
bridge...today we prepared a digital two minute movie accepting an award this
Saturday at the Governor's polo ball....then we P T for hours with Marines and a
Navy Seal (Commander Brian Losey)
on the main deck...many were new calisthenics In which I was a first timer...we
are forty feet off the water at the main deck where we work out each afternoon.
Tonight the ward room movie is Sand Pebbles with Steve McQueen which is
about our destination Shanghai. Sailing up the
Yangtze River Thursday was quite a sight...much like 100 years ago...the Chinese
Junks were everywhere to be seen...along with their gunboats and Chinese
Navy...they flew three (3) nautical pennants Whiskey Tango Charlie...in
effect...Welcome to China...the reception at the dock was like a movie
set...Their military was in formation along with the Chinese military band
playing tunes of John Phillip Sousa and then the Seventh Fleet Band struck up on
the main deck on the Blue Ridge and finished up with The Marines Hymn and
Anchors Aweigh. Curiously, not one
U. S. Navy sailor stood at attention when their music was played...they are
a little more relaxed than our Marines. The entire arrival was like an
old time movie...quite a scene. Imagine,
just one week prior to the twenty-four captives on Hinan Island. The Chinese
authorities requested the passports of the four-non active duty personnel
aboard. They decided we needed
special visa's..although research prior showed no requirement for visa's.
They kept PTB bottled up on the ship for one day; until the Admiral
basically said the hell with it. Colonel
Bates and I then went ashore...enjoyed some Chinese beer and chow. (first booze
in over a week) Later high tea at the Ritz-Carlton where the violin music
reminded one of by gone days or perhaps the San Marcos Plaza in Venice....quite
a charming scene. Saturday
evening we were back on the Blue Ridge which had the
"Big Top" set up for a diplomatic reception...this is a large
white awning over the forward deck of the ship....the Navy outdone themselves
with liquor served aboard. (usually
a taboo) The Navy had combo playing
music...later a Marine color guard and the Seventh Fleet Band put on Seventh
Fleet pageantry. The Marines from
the consulate guard were invited aboard, along with other Americans; who
clearly, were happy to see the power of the U S Military present and chat with
fellow Americans. Met the top
Chinese Admiral who was quite the speaker and he impressed PTB with his ability
to handle himself. (note:
Photograph with Admiral the Colonel, translators and PTB.
Sunday John and PTB will visit the famous Yuan Garden, the famous
Shanghai Museum and later the acrobatic show circa the Ritz-Carlton. Sailed off on
Monday the 26th..after the incredible feat of executing a "U" turn in
Shanghai's bustling harbor; while the seventh fleet band stuck up Anchors Aweigh
and headed for Thailand...E T A Two
April at Phattaya Beach three hours from Bangkok...to visit Herb Dockery... On 24th of
March PTB was an absent guest of honor at the Polo Governor's Ball...Colonel
Bates and I captured a two minute video which was transmitted to the ball for my
acceptance from the USS Blue Ridge in mid-ocean...Dr Caleel accepted the award.
..... his comments.... "Patrick
my friend, you were missed at the ball by all of your friends. Everyone enjoyed
your video from the U. S. Navy-----well done. I was pleased to accept a
beautiful Baccarat horse sculpture
on your behalf from Pat Nesbitt. I am reluctant to ship it so I will keep
it here in the desert & await your instructions--where, how etc. It's a
magnificent piece of art that I am certain you will enjoy.
Hope that you are having a great trip (I am sure that you are) Best Regards,
Richard" On this tape created
for the Governor's Ball and from the ship bridge; we commented on how the ship has seven Marines and six
hundred sailors and that the Marines were the backbone of the Fleet...a Navy
officer replied (on tape) "Mr. Brent we have heard your comment about our P
T program and you should keep in mind that the Marine Corps is just a DEPARTMENT
of the Navy".....Colonel Bates responded..." you are exactly correct a
department of the Navy....The MEN's Department" Well, it is now
Monday night, with red lights luminating all the ship's internal passageways, we
are cruising south magnetic heading 179; which will serve to warm our
environment five degrees everyday. Chinese
fishing trawlers are circling us off the straights of Taiwan ...in an attempt to
spy on our transmissions.
Hope my echo mikes are safe...smile. The keen mind of
Marvin Silverman sent Colonel Bates an e-mail cautioning him that "several
weeks with PTB would wear the Colonel out". This has become the understatement of the journey.
J. R. Bates is PTB's
match plus 200%. This
Officer has P T'd my tail off daily...PTB may wear out a few Sailors; but our
Marine Colonel, be assured, is quite safe Marvin.
JRB daily runs at 1530 for thirty minutes; then P T's with a small group
headed up by a Navy Seal Commander Brian Losey on the main deck. From 1600 to
1700 and then runs for another forty-five minutes.
PTB was graciously included for all this "bonus P T". Spent a few hours
today creating a video of the ship, the crewmembers, and the various
compartments...Not M G M...quality, however it may be fun. Thirty March after the "weekly" P T session for the Seventh Fleet staff (about 70 sailors) and a quick trip to sick bay accompanying the Colonel. Caused by a head injury caused by the ship rolling motion. The Blue Ridge went dead in the water for about two hours. One of two steam boilers was being taken down for maintenance; when the other boiler failed. This caused a power outage throughout the Blue Ridge; the crew went to general quarters. Steam was profusely exiting the starboard side of the ship. It was dramatic; when you consider we were alone in a big ocean. Two hours later repairs were accomplished and we were underway. We were 3 1/2 hours ahead of schedule...so now it is only 1-1/2 hours ahead. Saturday 31 March

just past coast of Vietnam and turning west into the Gulf Of Thailand
enroute to Pattaya Beach, Thailand. One deck had
awards for Seventh Fleet Staff and another deck had Captain's Mast for three
sailors up on charges held by the Captain of the Blue Ridge...attended both
functions....both professionally handled. Saturday Night
31 March brought an awesome tropical sunset about 1745 from the bridge of the
Blue Ridge...., most of the crew is hard at work.
John Bates stated Friday evening "only two more WORK days 'til
Monday" On
the other hand the Catholic chaplain Father Kevin Deely from Boston said Mass
for Colonel Mitch Paige,USMC MOH in the library as he does every evening.
Mitch is in another tough struggle with heart problems,
Had dinner with Mitch & Marilyn and the Jason's on 6 March and he
looked great. Chaplain Kevin offered prayers this Sunday morning for the Boston
Red Sox to win the pennant. It is
the first day of Baseball back in the USA.
Please note any Flaherty's on this "net" he is a pronounced
Boston College Eagles fan....he even roots against Notre Dame.
Had quite a bit of time with
this gifted man. Saturday night our
wardroom (where we eat) set up a showing of "Crouching Lion and Hidden
Dragon" quite an unusual
movie. The Seventh Fleet wardroom
has a large plasma screen and the DVD from Shanghai cost $2.00 and had English
dubbed; which the theater version did not.
They hosted quite a "party" with popcorn, O'Doul's Beer,
(non-alcoholic beer) hot dogs and chips. Which
is about as wild as things get at sea with the U. S. Navy. Next day: John Bates continues
to P T every one into the deck, which is now about one hundred and five degrees.
He is sharing his supply of Motran 800; which is the most popular item in
sick bay here. Will soon have a
couple of days ashore; where John says, "we may "P T a few hours per
day or until you puke".... just when I thought boot camp was history. Well, on Monday two
April the USS Blue Ridge anchored off Pattaya Beach Thailand.
We took water taxis ashore for liberty.
The first evening was another reception on board called the "Big
Top" for Embassy and business leaders of Thailand.
The weather was pure Hawaiian. The
Seventh Fleet Band out did themselves. They
played the big band arrangements and stole the show.
The Thai's love America and the warmth was obvious.
Their Marines and Navy have an annual war exercise called Operation
Cobra. The skyline of Pattaya was
like a Thai Waikiki. Going ashore
John and I found the water to be almost too warm; but we went swimming, running
and had Thai food at a tasteful place. We
then traveled up to the U. S. Embassy in Bangkok for a Force Protection meeting.
(PTB was not cleared for this session...alas.) After the Embassy
JRB & PTB checked into reputedly "The world's best hotel".
It certainly did not disappoint us.
The staff is well trained. Note:
Halekulani's Fred Honda. The
attention to detail is outstanding.. They have custom printed stationery waiting
in your suite, when you check into the Hotel. Thailand is
known as the "land of smiles". They
are genuinely happy people. We
would do well to study their lovely style and good manners. Thailand has 65,000,000 people.
Six million are in Bangkok. Buddhism
is 95%, Muslim 4% and one Irish Catholic. They
do have a big St. Patrick's Party every year.
It is a Constitutional Monarchy. They
are genuinely respectful of both their King and Buddha.
Where ever you go the oriental music from MASH the TV show playing in the
background. It is charming. The
Peninsula Hotel BKK has the best violin music at tea time. Well, here is
a report from Bangkok ...the daily two hours massage for $8.00 is tough to take
... the Thai people are clean, respectful, attractive. They are pleasant and
distinctly non-confrontational. We
Yanks could learn a thing or two from these charming Thai's. Had a visit to
the biggest Crocodile Park 100,000 plus in the world. (guide #29)
Hung out with a Chimpanzee, Bengal Tiger (big), and some baby Tiger cubs.
Have photo shots touching and petting them fed a Hippo, fed a crocodile,
and some giant catfish. They are
not as protective here as the states. (later
swimming with the Dolphins in Singapore) Been eating
Thai food and liking it...not as hot as Stateside. Meanwhile back
on the USS Blue Ridge thing are buzzing in regard to their actions to rescue the
Navy/Marine crew on Hinan Island from the Chinese. This adventure
has become far more than P. T. Brent expected.
Have been associating with Marines and a few Sailors most of my life.
However the time with John Bates and the Seventh Fleet has been a once in
a lifetime experience. What a
distinct honor to be with people; who are ready, willing, and trained to make
our worldwide "forward presence" felt and respected.
One of the senior members of the crew shared some worries over the crew.
When the twenty-four Americans (one Marine Sergeant) were detained on
Hinan Island, China; a few crew member were nervous and apprehensive about the
military consequences to their ship. The
dichotomy between these young Sailors; who joined to see the world and
experience the romance of the sea (check with their recruiters) and our Marines
is obvious. The Leathernecks actually get charged up over eminent action.
The Marine recruiters actually sell one product; you get to be a Marine.
One Navy Chief Petty Officer shared with me his recruiting success in
Salt Lake City. He set records
recruiting Utah youths by promising: "you will sail away to warm exotic
ports; where beautiful young women will do sensual things to you...and your
parents back in Utah will never know". Today I am at
liberty in Bangkok. Did my easy style (non JRB) P T,
one hour massage, purchased a giant brass sculpture for the Dolphin
Club-San Francisco's waterfront classic. Weight
300#..5 foot 6 inches of two giant dolphins leaping vertically into the air.
Then ordered three tailored Thai shirts made good work here, went to the
Peninsula Hotel for tea (really three glasses of wine...smile).
Witnessed an authentic Thai upscale wedding at the Peninsula Hotel, which
clearly rivals the Oriental Hotel. It
is new and at high tea; they have a
four-piece string group play Italian classics. PTB loves this sound from the past. Reminds one of the Plaza in Venice except; it was in a modern
and Asiatic environment. Toured the
property...by accident saw the inner workings; it is run like Disneyland.
The staff is well turned out in impeccable attire. Virtually all
the people in Thailand are attractive, charming and relaxed.
They are slender, have lovely facial features, and are naturally
tanned, respectful, and happy. The
treatment Thai men receive here is quite different from let's say men in New
York from their women. Yet women
here appear loved and cherished. Crime
and family abuse/discord is reported as minimum in Thailand. Perhaps some of their style and form would due well in the U.
S. A. We then
traveled to Port Klang, Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur for a visit, liberty, the Big
Top; which is the ship's reception for the US| Ambassador and guests.
Spent one night at the Sheraton-Imperial, visited the world's tallest
building "Twin Towers". (1482
feet tall) Had lunch at Kal tower, which overlooks the City.
We then traveled back to the ship for the last leg of my deployment to
Singapore. Later after pizza in the
wardroom; went up to the Bridge and check the course 193 south.
Overhead were brilliant stars all smiling upon this last night at sea in
the straights of Malaysia. Followed
by docking in Singapore, a stay at the legendary Raffles, one Singapore Sling (xie
xie Dr. Charles Bromfield), Polo, P T with the Colonel, and return to Hawaii. In Singapore,
Easter Sunday, Mass at the Cathedral Of the Good Shepherd, Raffles Hotel, Singapore
Polo (5 chukkers & FIP website meeting) where my trip of a life time will
drop anchor. Thank you...Yeo kuo Lee. One
Bold Navy Officer once asked "what is the price of joining a US Navy
Pacific Cruise?" Well, the
answer is "priceless." What memories...the
Fleet Band playing the Marine's Hymn and Anchors Aweigh, sailors and a Marine
Color Guard lining the rails of the Blue Ridge as the ship leaves the quay at
Shanghai, the smiles of the people of Thailand, the drama of Hinan Island, and
the young all-American faces who serve their nation with honor, I will
never forget. Here's a wish
for Fair Winds and Following Seas to the outstanding Crew of the U S S Blue
Ridge, P. T.
Brent, Singapore
IRISH
BLESSING..... for some very special people May the road
rise to meet you. May the wind be
always at your back. May the sunshine be
warm upon your face. And rains fall soft
upon your fields. And until we meet
again, May God hold you in
the hollow of His hand. A favorite of the
Seventh Fleet's Admiral...
Navy vs. Marines....the ship's sailors loved this one......
A salty Navy Chief and a crusty Marine First Sergeant are at an Irish pub
arguing about who had the tougher career.
"I did 29 years in the Recon," the Marine declared proudly,
"and fought in three of my country's wars.
Fresh out of boot camp, I hit the beach at Iwo Jima, clawed my way up the
blood-soaked sand, and eventually took out an entire enemy machine gun nest with
a single grenade."
"As a sergeant, I fought in Korea alongside General Chesty Puller.
We pushed back the enemy inch by bloody inch all the way up to the
Chinese border, always under a barrage of artillery and small arms fire."
"Finally, as a staff sergeant, I did three consecutive combat tours
in
Vietnam. We humped through
the mud and razor grass for 14 hours a day, plagued by rain and mosquitoes,
ducking under sniper fire all day and mortar fire at night.
In a fire fight, we'd shoot until our arms ached and our guns were empty,
then we'd charge the enemy with bayonets!"
Looking straight ahead, the Chief says nothing.
After a deliberately long, slow drink, the Chief says, "Yeah,
it figures...all shore duty." Copy of PTB's
end of voyage letter to Colonel John Richard Bates.... John you are
one hell of a GREAT Friend!!!! Well,
hopefully I did not embarrass you or the Corps. ... too much! ! ! The Taipan cruise was all and more than PT expected.
Be assured Mr. Brent is well aware that not a great number of former
Marine (E-4 types) cruise comfortably in a Flag Admiral's Stateroom.
Then again, who but John Richard Bates could accomplish this mission ...
absolutely no one could achieve a goal or target like my friend John Bates. Colonel, be
assured P. T. Brent has known for a long time what an incredible human being and
awesome Marine you are. In a world
of mediocrity, John Bates stands out as a gentleman who gets the mission done.
In my opinion (a well informed one) you are the finest Leatherneck I have
ever had the privilege to know. It
is a distinct honor to call you friend. You
have the intestinal fortitude, bravery, and sense of mission that sets you apart
from others John. There should
be a special Marine-Navy Medal for Men who give such "unstinting"
devotion to our Corps and Country. My
appreciation of your duties, job and service has been greatly honed by this
cruise John. Actually an
understanding of the young sailors and an appreciation of their long hours and
loneliness is another benefit of this journey. Hope this is
not to "sappy" John; but Mr. Brent believes in you down to his now
worn out sneakers.....Amen.

with Colonel J. R. Bates and the staff of the Seventh fleet was an easy
decision. Last year's
"Southern Swing " was the best invitation P. T. Brent has ever
received. Reticent last year, now I
am eager to sail this year. Circumstances
have changed. Our Marines and Navy
are at war. People, foolishly,
perceived as allies are now acknowledged as groups who hate Americans and any
other people who refuse to embrace their extreme religious and civil beliefs. Speaking of
religion, any one who has not read the basic primer of Buddha is missing some
good philosophies. They could be
utilized as sermons in all churches. Having
been several times to Mohammed's countries and to Buddha's
countries...Clearly...Buddha is cooler. This year the
Blue Ridge has some of America's best on board.
We have the USMC's "FAST"
platoon from Yokosuka Japan. Under the command of Captain Philip Waggoner; who reports to Colonel Bates. These awesome Marines are chosen from the best
graduates of Marine boot camp. These
Marines then go to "Gun Slinger's School.
The top one third of these graduates became members of the FAST Platoon.
(Fleet anti-terrorist security team)
These Marines are awesome marksmen. All Marines are fine riflemen.
These gentleman stand in port watch with a locked and loaded fifty
caliber Machine gun (Bullets the size of cigars) plus a loaded M16 rifle as well
as a loaded nine millimeter pistol on their hip.
The time frame when a suspected terrorist boat approaches and the
decision point when to destroy it; often is two to four minutes or less. It requires training and exceptional judgment.
The sailors seem comforted by the sheer presence of these warriors.
To my surprise, the genuine
respect and perhaps admiration is
clearly proffered to these rootin',tootin', rompin', stompin' U. S. Marines.
They walk, talk and comport themselves like men;
who can be trusted in a tough spot.
One Navy photographer claimed their hubris exceeds that of any Navy
personnel. There appears to be for the most part zero rivalry and a
profound respect for these squared away young Marines. As
this report is being written: cannons are actually booming off the main
deck of the USS Blue Ridge welcoming the U S Ambassador to Malaysia aboard.
The boson's mate whistles. The public address system announces "the
United States coming aboard"...quite a lofty tradition. Haze Grey and
underway once again commenced; when
PTB joined the ship on Thailand's Phuket Island.
Half of the crew was new. The veterans of 2001extended a warm welcome
back. There are from 600 to 900
Navy / Marine personnel aboard at different times.
Once again PTB was placed in the Admiral at Sea stateroom.... Nothing
like my early days as a young Marine doing amphibious training off the Atlantic
coast. Crammed deep within a troop
ship with an M1 rifle and all my gear, helmet et cetera on a canvas slab stacked
up with six other Leathernecks.... Life has improved. After a few
days and a "Big Top" reception we sailed to Penang Malaysia for
diplomatic and military duties. A
conference with allied naval forces of these other countries is one of the
Seventh Fleet's missions.
We arrived at sunrise, in
fact, a magnificent sunrise. Here
in the Far East the sun comes up "like thunder". The entry to Penang
Harbor had the Seventh Fleet Band playing Anchors Aweigh and sailors in dress
whites surrounding the outer rails of the main deck. PTB was on the bridge with the new Skipper who is quite the
leader and gentleman. In Penang
about a half mile from the ship is the Convent of Light Street School founded in
1852 by some French Nuns and Priests. This
all girl school from Kindegarden to twelfth grade is still run by five nuns and
their principal Amy Tan. It is like
visiting the sound of music set. The
girls all fluent in English are
uniformed and charming. The visit
made me miss my charming fourteen-year-old daughter in Monterey.
Laura's school in a California is a version of the same quality.
This school had some classrooms, which the conquering Japanese used to
imprison seventy-four US Submariners after the sinking of the USS grenadier off
shore. They had another blood
splattered chamber in which each sailor was tortured in across the passageway. Their
names are carved with their belt buckles in the walls...very moving.
Albert Rupp calls his book about this cruel experience "The
Threshold of Hell". After Malaysia
we power down the Strait of Malacca to Fortress Singapore...or at least what it
was miss labeled during the many years of British Colonization.
(Check your Atlas please) It is
twenty-two hundred on a rain swept and moon less night.
Experiencing the Blue Ridge bridge and standing next to a Marine Lance
Corporal who is scanning the horizon for both terrorist attacks and in this
particular locale, for pirates. On
the stern of the Blue Ridge a Navy Helicopter powers into life commanded by
Lieutenant Commander Bryan Gamble who minutes before departure was ask by PTB in
the wardroom. Tell me Commander
just how do you tell who is a Pirate out there tonight? The Helo Skipper stated: "It is easy,
Pirates have big hats with feathers an eye patch and a parrot on their shoulder.
This outstanding aviator and crew took off at 2200 and were scouting our
ship's passage until 0415 when they rotated crews.
America's men in uniform take this "911" declaration of war
seriously. Course 183
degrees South 29 Fathoms...heavy
radar traffic. The Bridge is
one deck up for PTB. "The
ship's Gentleman". Therefore
from time to time I venture forth to check the navigation with the dozen or more
dedicated young sailors. They are
experts in radar, navigation, radio and lookouts et cetera. The
FAST Platoon will stand night watch in this dangerous strait.
In the year 2001 over ninety cases of piracy on the high seas were
reported. One wise individual
stated that might be just a fraction of the real piracy.
Many are not reported due to the government's impounding these ships and
in effect adding insult to injury to their owners. These pirates are not of the Errol Flynn variety.
They should be exterminated. After
Singapore the Blue Ridges cruises over to the Indonesian Island of Bali.
Famous for its exotic scenery and charming beaches.
Route was down the Strait of Karlmata into the Java Sea and approaching
Bali from the North. We cross the
Equator right after our departure from Singapore.
People who cross the equator are labeled "Shellbacks" by
sailors everywhere. PTB crossed the
equator at 1852 hours on 26 February 2002. It is 2100 and
we are making 14 knots toward Indonesia on a heading of 129 degrees.
It is one of the most beautiful sights I have ever enjoyed.
Went out to the Leatherneck Lenai with a shipmate for a business chat.
Was mesmerized by the full moon and the peacefully calm ocean.
Stars in abundance, the Southern Cross and a few clouds were like the
work of an artist.
What a setting to enjoy with six hundred sailors and 29 Marines.
Spent an hour on the bridge just reflecting on how fortunate I am to be
aboard at this moment. My warmest mahalo to
one hell of a great Leatherneck for creating this unique and unforgettable
journey. Colonel Bates, J.R. is an
extraordinary human being. PTB will
depart from Indonesia for Hong Kong, BKK, Sydney, LAX and SFO and the twenty-
fourth anniversary of the Irish Sprint XXIV.
(Mahalo Captain Higgins) Aloha Kop, Patrick Brent **************
Epilog ************************************* No report would be
complete without sharing the daily "War Dogs" aboard the ship's main
deck forward the bridge. Each day
at 1600 for ninety minutes the Navy NCO's. SEALS, Marines and
sailors meet for "War Dogs".
A series of physical exercises which
combined with the hot deck are character builders. One could fry an egg at the
equator on this deck. Sessions
include 200 plus push ups and many other forms of "PT".
Of course Colonel Bates affords this friend "bonus PT" we run
laps both before and after War Dogs. Each
port of call would see John Bates leading P. T. Brent up and down the hills of
Phuket and Bali, the streets and riversides of Singapore, and the roads of
Penang. He always made me look good
by association. John could run
twice as fast and three times as far; but
he always graciously permitted PTB to run in the wing man position.

opusculum from Viet Thai Journey 12 September '03 First
embarked at Pattaya Beach, Thailand Alooooha
Elephant Polo is a kick and more serious than meets the eye or one would
expect. Originally dreamed /
conceived by James Manclark of Scotland fame, and later teamed co creator Jim Edwards, British Army ex-pat,
of Nepal launched the sport near their famous Tiger Tops location.
His son now carries on the tradition. The
rules are different and are cleverly tuned to this
4000-pound environment. The
field is about the size of a football field.
Been
with Tom & some Marines solely
except for one weekend of Elephant Polo...what a kick ...
captured some classic pictures for my "I love me room..."

Similar to US airlines compulsive rule on retirement at sixty.
This year thirty senior officers and one four star Admiral Terdsak
Satiensawasdi, the former Commandant retired at this ceremony.
The ceremony
has over fifty veteran sky divers, seven from HAHO levels with one sky diver
transporting the Thai Marine canine mascot to the delight of the large audience. They have
developed the skill of firing blank rounds intermingled with drill moves on and
off the ground in the parade area. Somewhat
disconcerting to have point blank rounds fired at the reviewing stand ...

witness / attend the ceremony for the remains of four US servicemen being return
to Hickham Hawaii for forensic DNA identity. It was held
with the US Vietnam Ambassador and several
We
lost 58,000+ We dropped more bombs
on North Vietnam than all of Europe in World War II. On
the Danang Headquarters of our Marines during the war.
The spot Red Beach where Marines were the firsts combat troops to arrive
in country. Next to this beach in
China Beach famous by the TV series of same name.
The old R B&R resort is now a Five star Futurama Hotel and is worth a
visit. Saigon....

political foolishness that started the two wars French and
American...went with the Majors Two. They have
until recently called it a war criminal museum... It is an attack on
America in part unfair...disgusting... not use to others being the
"Victor" and having USA tanks and property on site for

with Colonel Bates and the Marines week...ouch. John Bates,
reputedly the finest Leatherneck anywhere, has eight-mile runs up and down
Pendleton hills that try the soul. Already
dehydrated from a couple. of Bonus

From England, Atherton Ca, and Hawaii.

tower jump and a few other "hurrah" photographs are available. Landed the
week prior at the Santa Barbara polo club, where I attended the moving service
for Eric Friden at the Santa Barbara Mission.
The second increment (each with 300 pups) has just completed
training. Will be

Garage, laundry tubs and other drive way items out-of-sight please. 8.
Beverage machine should have an Hawaiian front and be out-of-sight. 9.
Plastic flowers should be replaced with items of plain décor or real
flowers. 10.
Management should walk around to be sure this is a on going way of doing
business. 11.
All staff should pick up trash as they
go to and from work especially the managers who set the professional tone.
Patrick Brent M

From
8 January 03 Eddie Sherman Column Honolulu Faces out front:
Patrick Brent, polo aficionado, businessman, owner of a small Waikiki hotel and
a one man PR drum-beater for the Marines of which he once was, enjoyed a chat at
Hana Maui with a fella claiming to be Leonardo DiCaprio. The guy was in baggy
clothes and wore a beard, saying he was with his mother and sister. Patrick was
there with his 15-year-old dotter Laura. All were lunching at the Hana Hotel.
Later, Patrick was rather impressed when the star’s identity was confirmed.
DiCaprio is a hot at the box office currently with two biggies screening, Catch
Me If You Can with Tom Hanks and Gangs of New York. DiCaprio told Brent his next
opus is the Howard Hughes story … Even yesterday’s stars are still hot —
if the name is Elvis. Imagine — more than 25 years after he died, a new
compilation of 30 of his No. 1 hits recently debuted at the top of the charts.
Not only in America, but also in many foreign lands — Canada, France, Brazil,
Australia, Argentina and even in Arab countries. Even his estate is making more
money today than when he was alive … The march of time: About 40 years ago,
many people wanted to look like either Marlon Brando or Elizabeth Taylor.
Definitely not today because the shape they’re both in now … Taking the show
on the road: Quietly, many of our performers who may not get too many gigs
locally seem to be very much in demand on the Mainland. Hawaiiana sells. One of
the busiest across the pond is Cyril Pahinui (son of the legendary Gabby) with a
slew of play dates up to here … Check this out: I read it somewhere — that
drinking moderate amounts of coffee can reduce your chance of getting colon
cancer by a substantial percentage. Are you listening, Starbucks??? … When
Dalton Tanonaka (he ran for lt. gov. in the last election) was in North Korea,
he arranged for many youngsters to have their first ice skates. The story behind
the story. Tanonaka was in that country to fulfill a wish of his late
grandmother, Hannah Kim Liu. Before she died in Honolulu, Hannah told Dalton she
hoped one day to go home. So he carried dirt from her grave in Honolulu and
sprinkled it where she was born in the city of Kumgang. One day, while in N.
Korea, Tanonaka spotted a bunch of kids skating on a frozen lake. As got closer,
he saw that the kids’ “skates” were just pieces of wood and twigs lashed
around their feet. Returning home, Tanonaka contacted Doug Taylor, owner of the
Ice Palace skating emporium here. Now, a whole bunch of happy ice-skating North
Korean youngsters think Dalton is the greatest … Gee, too bad: Seems to be
getting more difficult these days for thieves breaking into tourists’ cars
parked at the Pearl Harbor Arizona Memorial. Thanks to some stiffer laws and
penalties … Just giving an interesting item a bit more circulation: In a
recent Outrigger Hotels Saturday Briefing house organ, Dr. Chuck Kelley extolled
the artistic talent of longtime Outrigger employee Richard Omori hired by his
grandfather Roy Kelley 50 years ago. In appreciation of the opportunities he
received at Outrigger, Omori’s beautiful koa-framed oil painting of Roy and
wife Estelle hangs prominently on the wall of the hotel’s executive office n n
